The 2022 First Ordinary Session of the Economic Community of West African States, (ECOWAS) Parliament ended on Monday, 27 June 2022 in Abuja, Nigeria with the adoption of several Reports from the meetings of the Institution and the issuance of favourable opinions on draft Texts submitted by the ECOWAS Commission.
During the closing session, Parliament adopted a Resolution against terrorist attacks in the West African region and the looming risk of famine in the region.
While declaring the Session closed, the First Deputy-Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Ahmed Idris Wase, reminded the MPs of their main responsibility “which is to represent the people and to work towards the transformation of our Community into a self-sufficient, viable, prosperous and peaceful sub-region”.
The First Deputy-Speaker reiterated the importance of electing Community Parliamentarians through direct universal suffrage. “The first step towards attaining full Parliamentary status is by electing Members of the ECOWAS Parliament through universal suffrage“, he pointed out.
The election of Community Parliamentarians through direct universal suffrage is the flagship project of this Fifth Parliamentary Legislature.
