Members of Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), meeting in plenary on the occasion of the 2021 Second Ordinary Session of Parliament, issued a favourable opinion to the “ECOWAS Vision 2050”, on Saturday, December 4, 2021 in Abuja.

At the heart of this vision is “A community of peoples fully integrated in a peaceful, prosperous region, with strong institutions that respect fundamental freedoms and work for inclusive and sustainable development”.

This vision comes with a slogan: “The ECOWAS of Peoples: Peace and Prosperity for All”.

Thus, this new regional prospective frame of reference for the next thirty years proclaims, that ECOWAS must become a community of peoples, by placing more emphasis on the youth and women who are the region’s forces vives.

Vision 2050 is based on five pillars, i.e.: A secure, stable and peaceful region; a region endowed with strong institutions, and that complies with the rule of law and fundamental freedoms; a fully integrated and prosperous region; a region mobilized for transformation, inclusive and sustainable development; a community of peoples fully inclusive of women, the youth and children.

The successful implementation of the ECOWAS Vision 2050 will not only require awareness creation and knowledge of ECOWAS and its Vision, but also, that the main domestic and foreign stakeholders understand it, own it and commit and contribute to its achievement.
