Community Parliamentarians informed of the powers of the Parliament In light of the restructuring of the ECOWAS Commission

The opening of the Parliamentary Seminar on: “Application of the Supplementary Act on the Enhancement of the Powers of the Parliament in light of the restructuring of the ECOWAS Commission”, took place on Thursday, 29 September, 2022 in Lomé, the capital of Togo.

The Members of the Economic Community of West African States, (ECOWAS) Parliament were informed of the powers of the Community Parliament in light of the restructuring of the ECOWAS Commission.

The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, pointed out in his opening speech that the Seminar provided an opportunity for Parliamentarians to better understand the scope of their enhanced powers and to fully take ownership of them.

The Speaker of the Community Parliament emphasized that “the Seminar would enable Members to be adequately informed of the institutional reforms underway in the ECOWAS system, particularly within the ECOWAS Commission, and how they directly affect their work”.

The Speaker, Hon. Tunis also hoped that the Seminar would prompt the Parliament to enhance their capacity to enable the Institution play its role in the exercise of its political and diplomatic functions.

Speaking on the presidential elections that will take place in 2023 in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia, Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis said he “believes that any accession to power must be through free, fair and transparent elections.”

To this end, he expressed hope that all mechanisms would be put in place to enable the people to freely express their will through their vote.
